1018 steel has a low carbon content of about 18%. It is the most common of the cold-rolled steels. It combines the typical traits of steel, such as ease of machining, strength and some ductility for make strong welds

C1018 contains a higher manganese content than certain other low carbon grades, creating a harder and more uniform case. It has high mechanical properties and good machinability due to it being a cold drawing process.
Cold drawing increases tensile and yield strength but decreases ductility. Cold drawing also increases torsional strength, surface hardness and wear resistance. Due to size limitations of the cold drawing process, large diameter bars are generally machine turned and polished,

C1018, comes in flats, squares and hexagons, has a relatively large size selection.

Applications:

Useful for parts, such as gears, ratchets, worms, pinions, pins, chain pins, dowels, machine parts,
on parts requiring threading, drilling, punching and machining. frequently used for mounting plates, spacers and various fixtures, that do not require the greater strength of high carbon and alloy steels.
